VE Day 80th Anniversary 8th May 2025

Following on from D-Day 80 – 6th June 2024, in which we commemorated the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, we are now commemorating the 80th Anniversary of VE Day which marked the end of the war in Europe.

In celebration of this important anniversary there are events taking place throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK overseas territories. Full details of all these events can be found via this link:- https://www.veday80.org.uk/

Within our Parish the special commemorative flag will be raised outside the Church Rooms at 9:00am on the 8th May and the bells of St Mary’s Church will ring at 6:30pm along with many other churches and cathedrals.

Other events taking place nationwide include:

Pipers will play Celebratum on the four peaks – Snowdon, Scafell Pike, Slieve Donard and Ben Nevis. Celebratum has been specially composed for VE Day 80th anniversary.

Fish and Chips – was not rationed by Prime Minister Churchill during the whole of WWII, we also want to use this occasion to continue paying tribute to the brave fishermen who fished the seas and the farmers and land girls who toiled in the fields, by encouraging the eating of Fish and Chips throughout the day, as part of VE Day 80.

Lighting of bonfires, beacons and lamplights of peace at 9:30pm

Sing along with “I vow to thee my country” as played by the Massed Bands of HM Royal Marines at 9:30pm.

Meare Parish Council have purchased the commemorative flag and lamppost signs which will be placed around the Parish prior to the day.
